In Umbria, UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, recognized Assisi and the other Franciscan sites and two places belonging to the serial site as "World Heritage" "The Longobards in Italy: the places of power (568-774 AD) "which includes the most important Lombard testimonies present on the Italian territory.

Assisi, with its Basilica and the value of the artists who worked there, was immediately inspired by culture and spirituality: the spread of the artistic and spiritual message of the Franciscan Order spread throughout the world influencing the art of several other cities. Assisi is a unique example of integration of a "sanctuary city" in its birthplace, the Umbrian-Roman and then medieval city, to then come to our day perfectly in continuity and synergy with the contemporary.

The Basilica of San Francesco is then considered an exceptional example of an architectural complex that has modified the concept of architecture itself. Finally, according to the opinion of UNESCO, Assisi, as the birthplace of the Franciscan Order, "has been closely associated since the Middle Ages with the cult and spread of the same Franciscan movement in the world, transmitting a universal message of peace and tolerance".

Tasting

A small land of great flavors, Umbria is able to satisfy every type of palate: for meat lovers, the flagship is pork. This last thanks to the skill of the pork butchers is transformed into delicious sausages or flavored hams and cured meats, known as those of Norcia, to be enjoyed with the sciapo bread that enhances the flavor.

From the flavors also decided the cheeses, among these worthy of note are the seasoned pecorino, the fresh or seasoned caprino.

In dishes or as a side dish, lentils from Castelluccio di Norcia, a tasty ingredient of soups and broths, which have obtained from the European Union the IGP (protected geographical indication).

The rich assortment of dishes goes hand in hand with the genuine quality of the products of the earth, among which the truffle is the main protagonist. The most common variety is that of the black truffle, very appreciated as a condiment for pasta and game, especially in the area of ​​Norcia and Spoleto, but also the prized white truffle, which can be found especially in the Tiberina Valley, in the areas of Orvieto and Gubbio.

Another symbolic product of these lands is the oil, golden and fruity, which enriches each dish without covering its flavor, reaching a level of quality that achieves the PDO (Protected Designation of Origin).

Among the desserts you cannot give up the typical dessert, the panpepato.
